Vocabulary Across the Curriculum at MAHS
Preparing for the PSAE
by Laura Whitehead
Students at Madison Accelerated High School are focused on academic success! Across the board, students are preparing to demonstrate their achievements on the PSAE this Spring. Nearly 100 of the most commonly used words on the ACT have been posted on an enormous word wall on the second floor of the high school. Each day during 1st hour, teachers will introduce a handful of words and then implement a specific structure to guide students through increasingly deeper levels of understanding as the week progresses. At the end of the week, students will be assessed during 2nd hour in a format similar to the ACT. Additionally, weekly words will be posted in each classroom, on the message board outside the office, announced each morning, displayed on the monitors in the cafeteria, and incorporated into the everyday vocabularies of all staff and students. This vocabulary initiative has the potential to be a lot of fun for everyone! Let's put on our thinking caps and devise ways we can get competitive, reward achievement, and celebrate success as we grow in this process!
