Assistant Principal's Office

As I begin the 2018-2019 school year as your Assistant Principal, I want to assure you that the high standards set by Madison Community Unit School District 12 will remain an integral part of my leadership. Though not an original idea, but as proof of my loyalty and dedication to you and your children attending Bernard Long Elementary School, I make the following heartfelt pledge:

I will put students first.

As a school, we are a service business. I will always remember why I chose to become an educator; to be part of a cause bigger than myself and to have a positive impact on our students’ future.

I will be visible.

I will be in the hallways, classrooms, and at events as much as my schedule permits. I will make it a point to get to know staff, students, and parents.  I will make myself accessible to ALL parents.  I will greet your child with a smile, wish them a pleasant day, and tend to their needs as much as I can.  My door is always open!

I will engage our community.

Parents are vital partners to our work. I will do my part to build relationships with our families through our PTO and other community partnerships.

I will listen.

I will engage all of our staff and listen to their concerns.  They are the experts, and their opinions matter to me.  I will respect them even if it conflicts with the decisions I have made or need to make.  I will make time to keep these conversations going throughout the school year to maintain a sense of mutual understanding and hopefully create a forged allegiance to help our students make the greatest possible academic achievements.

I will be direct.

I will articulate my views or values so that everyone knows my perspective. I believe it is important to communicate regularly so you will know who I am and what I am about.  I may appear to be overly inquisitive when meeting the needs of our students and addressing your concerns, but know that I care and only seek clarity.

I will empower.

Our teachers think outside the box when it comes to your child’s education.  My creativity is not limited, so I will not anticipate that theirs will be.

I will make tough decisions.

I realize that some hard calls will need to be made and will decide on how best our resources will help the most students. I will be open about my thought process and be willing to share why I have made certain choices. I will also have difficult conversations with students, staff, and parents when necessary.  The best outcome is what is best for our students!

I will represent and advocate for our school in my actions, appearance, and words.

I take my role seriously and will do my best to enhance the reputation of our school and community. Public education is under attack.  I will emphasize that our work is a profession, not a job.

I will be accountable.

While I commit to making tough decisions, listening, and being direct, I also realize that I will make mistakes. When this happens, I will take responsibility for those mistakes, correct them, and improve on my actions. I will not ask anyone to do anything I am not willing to do myself, including coming out of my own comfort zone to learn and grow.

As educators, parents, and a community we are a team!

I make this pledge to support you and your children's efforts as we strive to improve their lives and guarantee their future successes!

With great respect,

Nate Porter

Assistant Principal
