ATTENTION PARENTS: From the Office
Dear Parents/Guardians:
February was jammed packed with events! We want to send a special thank you to all of those who were able to attend our activities. Your continued support of our students is appreciated.
PARKING DURING PICK UP/DROP OFF: WE ASK THAT YOU DO NOT DOUBLE PARK ON 7TH STREET. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL COMPLAINTS AND WE WOULD LIKE TO AVOID ANY UNNECESSARY TICKETING/TOWING.
MORNING DROP OFF POLICY: IF YOUR CHILD ARRIVES AT SCHOOL AFTER 8:00 A.M. THEY MUST BE SIGNED IN AT THE MAIN OFFICE.
Our final “Combat The ISAT; Saturday Bootcamp” date was February, 27,2010. This program was designed to equip our third graders with additional preparation for the March 8 - 12th Illinois Standards Achievement Test. On March 2nd, 2010 our third grade teachers and Harris staff will be conducting our annual home visits to ensure all parents/guardians are well informed about the ISAT test.
Test Taking Tips
- Get a good night’s rest
- Eat a balanced breakfast (and dinner the night before)
- Arrive at school on time —> everyday!
- Manage your time and try your best
Haiti Relief Fundraiser: Due to the catastrophic natural disaster that struck Haiti in January, Harris Elementary School was able to raise over $1000.00 to send to Haiti. All proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross. Thanks for your help!
Lunch Time/Snack Reminder: Many of our students are bringing soda, candy and large bags of chips to school each day for lunch. This creates a hardship for us because children are sharing with other students which spreads germs and also causes students to not eat their nutritious school lunch. We are asking that you REFRAIN from sending the large bag of chips and excessive candy and or soda in your child’s lunch effectively immediately!
Cold/Flu Season Reminder: Winter is quickly approaching, we ask that you please bundle your children up before they leave your home. Several students are coming to school without coats or hats. Please do not send your child to school if he/she is running a fever. We ask that students not return after a fever until they have been fever free for 24 hours without medication.
Uniform Reminder: Please refer to our Uniform Policy on page 4. Despite the weather getting colder, students must abide by the district’s policy. Undershirts or pants that do not match our school colors are not to be worn (i.e., pink undershirts or dark brown corduroy pants).
Behavior Incentive Reminder: We have put a behavior incentive in place to prevent any more office or bus referrals. We still have some students who will not stay in their seats. However our Bus Referrals have reduced significantly (more than half) since the beginning of the year! Beginning Oct. 19 through April 30 any student who doesn’t have any referrals will be invited to a School Dance/Dinner in May 2010. Last year we invited over 200 students. Please reinforce the school and class rules with your
son/daughter.

IMPORTANT POLICY INFORMATION
Our hours are 8:00-2:30. We serve breakfast from 7:25-7:45. We will not serve any breakfast after 7:45. We begin our morning announcements at 7:50 each day in the cafeteria. Students should not arrive earlier than 7:25 because there is no one available to supervise them at that time.
If your son/daughter is late to school you must come to the office and sign your child in; you can’t send them inside the building alone. This is a district policy. Also some students are arriving late daily; if this continue we will report the student to the truancy officer.

ID's: Students and teachers are expected to wear ID's each day. Students should not bring ID's home. If ID's are lost there will be a $5.00 charge for a new one.
Uniforms:
- UNIFORM POLICY
Shirts—forest green, white or navy blue (no sleeveless), polo style or white dress shirt.
Pants— khaki or navy blue pants (plain—no cargo. Dickies or Dockers are o.k.)
Shorts—khaki or navy (knee length)
Skirts– khaki or navy blue (knee length or just above knee)
Sweat shirts or sweaters– light gray or navy blue. No hoods, crew neck only
Shoes– Predominately white or black
No open toe, sandals or heels.
Socks– plain white
Belt– white, black or brown, plain (no designer buckles).

VISITORS/SAFETY: You must sign into the main office upon entering the building. This enforces the board policy and also ensures safety for all of our students.

Buses:
We have had numerous bus referrals which resulted in bus suspensions. Review the bus rules with your child to ensure safety for all students. Please help us remain referral free! We currently have three buses that transport our students daily. Bus numbers 91,93,95. We are proud to say that our discipline has decreased tremendously since the beginning of the year. We installed cameras on bus 95 to help improve student behavior. Parents we ask that you continue to review the bus safety rules with your son/daughter and remind them of the following:

Parents the district recently purchased an automated communication system called “School Reach” this allows the school to send automated messages to you regarding school events, No School, early dismissals, etc. We are excited about this new opportunity to increase our communication with our parents.
